Kindle Voyage: Our First Impressions

Kindle Voyage: Our First Impressions

The New Kindle Voyage Breaking News... Amazon are releasing the Kindle Voyage in October for the USA Market, here is our first impressions and comparisons based on all the data Amazon have released.
On paper it looks like the Kindle Voyage is indeed a deluxe version of the Kindle Paperwhite and here is why.
The screen has a 50% increase in pixel density compared to the Kindle Paperwhite and nearly a 100% on the basic version Kindle at it's impressive 300ppi. Note that the latest smartphones at 3 times the price have 400ppi but an Ipad has around 264 ppi depending on the model.

Lights... Both the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Voyage have lights whereas the Kindle does not and while smartphones and tablets are illuminated they do so from behind the screen. This is where Amazons flagship readers are better they illuminate from the front of the screen away from your eyes, thus cutting out eyestrain.
The Kindle Voyage also has adaptive front light which means that in the dark the display will slowly dimmer as your eyes adjust to your background, which seems a smart idea but if you find it doesn't work for you, you can turn off this feature.

Battery... 6 weeks! Erm ok but only if you read for just 30 minutes a day, which is highly unlikely if you are an avid reader.
It equates to around 24 hours of battery life which is very much similar to the Kindle Paperwhite and a darn lot more than any smartphone or tablet would give you, so if you are an avid reader then a Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Voyage would make more sense than a mobile or tablet.
If you are a less regular reader who fits reading in on the train home from work then a dedicated reading device seems less important.
Kindle Family Library is a new idea from Amazon and it will allow you to share your books with family members which is about time, after all you would pass on a hardback or paperback you have read to one of your family.
But this will only work on recently purchased kindles when they eventually release this feature.

The design of the Kindle Voyage is slightly smaller and a lot thinner than the Kindle Paperwhite which supposedly makes it easier to hold which I guess is right if you haven't got larger hands.
It is 10% lighter than the Kindle Paperwhite which has to be a good thing for long reading sessions.
It also has PagePress which I gather is forms of buttons on the side of the device for changing pages, it will vibrate if you squeeze to hard and this is a new feature just for the Kindle Voyage, so a handy feaure for those not so keen on touch screen only devices.

Other features include taking notes, dictionary and Wikipedia and expanded xray that lets you explore a book better. You can link to Goodreads or translate a book into a different language as well as all the other kindle features.

Conclusion
For once in a while reading then a smartphone or tablet will suffice you but for avid readers then a Kindle Paperwhite is a good idea since it will cut down on eyestrain.
The Kindle Voyage with its enhancements does look tempting if you have the extra money to buy, at the moment there doesn't seem a good reason not to go with this if upgrading from a basic kindle or from a phone or tablet but I do see the cheaper Kindle Paperwhite still doing well.

The Complete Dangerous Davies: by Leslie Thomas

As plainclothes men go, Dangerous Davies looks like a nonstarter. The small fry of petty larceny and minor disturbances in the backwaters of northwest London are his daily round. His philosophising Welsh drinking companion Mod, his outsized and unruly dog Kitty, his quarrels with his landlady Mrs Fulljames none of these bodes well for the efficient solving of crimes and outwitting of villainy. But Davies is encouraged by his beautiful friend Jemma, and every so often he stumbles upon...
