Winging It!

Winging It!

Winging It!

Pirate Jim for all his bravado fell into a heap when faced with rough seas.

Early one morning, Himself and The Author were due to take Her Outdoors, a boat of insubstantial length with a shiny new copper bottom, from the calm of the boat yard back to Brixham as small seaside town in South Devon. What could go wrong?

Light House

The River Dart

The launch went well at 7am on a cold March morning. Her Outdoors avoided the sneaky sandbanks and headed down the River Dart. At this point I should mention that a black hearted weather system was headed for the South West hence the hurry to get home. The river cruise went well and we nosed our way out of the entrance into the sea with Dartmouth Castle glowering at us.

In hindsight -oh it is a wonderful thing - we should have taken note of the sleek 'Gin Palace' cruiser that had turned tail and was heading back for the safety of the river. But Pirate Jim was not forthcoming with his nautical advice.

We then entered the washing machine where the river meets the sea. Her Outdoors banged and crashed her way through, climbing mountain waves before disappearing into the deep.

Cruiser

Pirate Jim was silent.
The Author clung on for dear life.
Himself said ‘I can see calmer water ahead.’
The Author kept one foot on the deck for a quick escape.

It took a further half an hour of being battered by an onshore wind, whipping the waves into slashing teeth that nipped at our heels, before we saw the welcome sight of Berry Head. We nudged past the stern cliffs punching out into the sea and rolled into The Bay.

Pirate Jim looked smug.
Himself went all nautical.
The Author kept one foot on the deck, just in-case.
It wasn’t until we slipped past Brixham Breakwater’s long protecting arm and sighed into our mooring in the marina that I relaxed.

Pirate Jim Would

Pirate Jim

Pirate Jim was intolerably jolly.
Himself said ‘That wasn’t too bad was it?’
The Author kept her own council.
Would they do it again?
Pirate Jim certainly.
Himself if he had to.
And The Author?

Well after such an experience she can write about the sea with conviction. She is able to retell the story without breaking down. But would she do it again? I think you know the answer to that.

Fish Soup by Michelle Heatley

Mystical, yet at the same time worldly, and written in a quirky lilt (in three very different voices), this feast for the senses will lavish your own life with tears and delight, and perhaps a little more than a touch of whimsy.
In the magical and esoteric atmosphere of the Greek Islands, sisters Isa and Chloe fetch up on the shores of a very special haven, each searching for more than just the pungently fragrant recipe of a heady Mediterranean fish soup. They come for the weekend,...
