Patience Is the Key to Success

I have now written two books, and this is the lesson I have learned. patience is the key to writing success. I realized that no matter how wonderful a book is it won’t get read unless you tell people about it. It is not possible, unless you are well established, to just publish a book and leave it without doing some kind of marketing and promotion. Watching your book sit there unread is one of the most frustrating things you can go through. Here are a few things that helped me as a new author put things in perspective.

First of all, you must face the fact that you are unknown. No one besides your friends and family know you have written a book, so get out and tell people. After hitting up my friends and family I decided to go to work and tell my supervisor. I not only told the current one I also mentioned it to former supervisors. It worked out very well, because it shows you are self-motivated. My current supervisor not only read the book, but also used it to boost my annual evaluation. All of the supervisors asked me to keep them informed of my progress when I told them I was starting on my second book. This meant my second book already had potential readers.

This caused a chain reaction, when the supervisors discussed the book my coworkers found out about it one by one. Most of the time I work at home so my interaction with coworkers is limited. I found out word was getting around the building when a coworker called my home office and said so and so enjoyed your book. I was not aware the person had even read it. It was very exciting, and I decided to make a business card and have my husband tell his coworkers. He was so excited about the responses that he got into the habit of carrying the cards everywhere he went.

For example, if he found himself at an electronics store after his purchase he’d hand the salesman his card and tell them to read the book. I thought that was a very interesting idea. You’re interacting with these people anyway, so why not ask them to read your book. You will find that most don’t mind doing it. All of this was done before I tried to tackle the internet.

Now let’s talk about the internet. This one is the most time consuming. I have accomplished getting some reads, not many, but it’s a start. This is where your patience comes in. First, I decided to find reliable amazon reviewers. You can google amazon top reviews for any country and the list will appear. Here is the US link: Amazon Top Reviewers

First thing you do is read the profile, and determine if they review books or eBooks. Once you determine that, you next pay attention to the kind of books they like to read. Once you find a few people that seem to fit your agenda draft a professional email, and politely ask them if they will read and review your book. Don’t put them on a deadline, because many of these people have day jobs. You are also not the only person asking for a review. They are not obligated to honor your request.

To keep yourself from getting overwhelmed choose two to three people a day to email. Don’t frustrate yourself looking for responses. Some can take up to three weeks to respond while others never respond. If they tell you they won’t read your book thank them for responding and leave it at that. Don’t burn your bridges, because you don’t know what’s going on in their lives and they may later decide to go ahead and read it. You never know.

My final suggestion is going to be hard to resist. Stop looking at your sales, author rank, and searching for reviews people have agreed to give you. As a matter of fact don’t send follow up emails. There are thousands of reviewers to email. Keep focused on getting those emails out. Going to amazon or whichever website you sell your book on will only drive you crazy. The best time to check is when you get an alert saying you are going to receive a payment. Only check to make sure you are getting the correct amount. I hope this information helps get you started. I still consider myself a newbie, but this has worked for me so far. Good luck to you all, and I wish us all much success!
