Words Matter: Is Kindle Unlimited Pages Read Fair?

In a nutshell it sounds fair, if you write a book and it is good then you are going to get a fairer share of the cake, if its not good and people do not finish reading it then you get less.
Going by that mentality it is fair, the better you write the bigger the slice of cake you get.

BUT
What about children's illustrated books there are hundreds on Kindle Unlimited, all of them with lovely illustrations to go with the few words on each page, which is what a parent and a child wants, lots of pretty pictures and a few words to learn on each page to help in its reading development.

Would it be fair to price the royalties on these books the same way you would with an adult novel?
I look forward to seeing what will happen in the coming months, I for one hope the royalties for these books reflect their importance rather than their word count.

What Kindle Unlimited Already Means To Websites Like This One
We sell books and are often amazed when we go check our figures that books that customers say they got from our website do not show up as sales, for a while we put it down to many things, our links not working properly, the reader buying it but not from us etc etc.
The truth is they are probably getting the book on kindle unlimited, we don't get paid for these so we don't see how many sales are lost from this unless a reader comments on twitter or facebook.
As a business this means we are losing quite a few sales each week and with more books available on Kindle Unlimited it looks like any income from Amazon will become less.
We are glad the author is getting paid that is our main purpose, to bring authors and readers together but for us and others in a similar position it means finding other ways to fund our business.

What Amazon Says
taken from Kindle Unlimited Pages Read
Beginning July 1, 2015, we'll switch from paying Kindle Unlimited (KU) and Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL) royalties based on qualified borrows, to paying based on the number of pages read. We're making this switch in response to great feedback we received from authors who asked us to better align payout with the length of books and how much customers read. Under the new payment method, you'll be paid for each page individual customers read of your book, the first time they read it.

Royalty payments under the new program

As with our current approach, we'll continue to set a KDP Select Global Fund each month. Under the new payment method, the amount an author earns will be determined by their share of total pages read instead of their share of total qualified borrows.

Here are some examples of how it would work if the fund was $10M and 100,000,000 total pages were read in the month:
•The author of a 100 page book that was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

•The author of a 200 page book that was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $2,000 ($10 million multiplied by 20,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

•The author of a 200 page book that was borrowed 100 times but only read halfway through on average would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

We will similarly change the way we pay KDP Select All-Star bonuses which will be awarded to authors and titles based on total KU and KOLL pages read.
