TV Series to be made of Author Phil Rickman's Merrily Series

Phil Rickman This time next year, the many fans of the author's Merrily series, should be able to view the three episode pilot of Midwinter of the Spirit named after the second book in the series.
It is being produced by Phil Collinson (Doctor Who, Coronation Street, Sea of Souls) and executive produced by Kieran Roberts (The Trials of Jimmy Rose, Blue Murder, Coronation Street).
The text being adapted by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Stephen Volk (Gothic, Ghostwatch, Afterlife).

With such a line up this has the potential to become a major TV series, which should get aired in the UK and USA at roughly the same time as it is made by ITV Encore, a partnership between ITV and Sky.
Phil Rickman reported to the Hereford Times, that casting for the TV series will be done before Christmas, I for one being a long time fan of all of Phil Rickman's books, can't wait to see who gets to play all the characters I already know so well.

For those of you new to Phil Rickman's series of books about Merrily Watkins, here is a brief description taken from the first book in the series A Wine For Angels.
Merrily Watkins: late thirties, single mum, parish priest. Cosy? I don't think so...
The new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parish - or a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a seventeenth-century clergyman accused of witchcraft... a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure.
But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets...
A paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And also - as Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discover - a village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.

There are now 12 books in this series which could all be adapted if the pilot goes well, which everybody at The Phil Rickman Appreciation Society will be hoping for.
Apart from Merrily and her daughter Jane who is at that age where everything she does will give her mum concern, the other main characters are :-

Gomer Parry who is my favourite character as well as many other fans as well, he owns the local plant hire firm, he is well into his seventy's and doesn't take any lip from anybody. He is a big friend to Merrily and she wouldn't have made it through every book without his help.

Lol as in Laurence and not "laugh out loud," In the beginning he has a lot of his own personnel problems and needs coaxing out of his shell but with Merrily's help he starts believing in himself again and his music, once again he is always there to help Merrily or Jane who like I said is at that age.

Local police team – DCI Annie Howe and DS Franny Bliss these two seem to love to hate each other, one thing that is for certain is that they will be calling on Merrily to help them solve their cases.
The great thing about Phil Rickman's books is the characters are so believable and there are many more I could list here but not all of them would be in every book as a major character.

The series is based around Hereford and all the places really exist except for Ledwardine, if your already a fan you would know there is actually a book about all the places and churches used in the series, which is pretty cool for fans to read and see the pictures of these places in real life.
The TV company has already approached Hereford Cathedral about filming there, as it is pretty essential to the story line but a decision has not been made yet, hopefully they will get the go ahead.
A few years back I met up with Phil Rickman, on a Hereford walk which was arranged by Liz Hill for Visit Herefordshire, apart from getting to know this great author on a more personal level, we got to tour around the cathedral with him acting as tour guide, it was great to see the places we had visualised in his books. It was in Midwinter and freezing so a lot of the photos I took on the day suffered from camera shake but here are a few that were not too bad.

If you haven't read a Phil Rickman book yet then I deeply urge you to, you might find like many others, you will need to read them all.
