Mike left Egan Firewalker Quartz and his bossy teen daughter Flame behind in the Nevada desert when she flew to Scotland to marry her “traditional minister” in a “traditional Scottish wedding” and live the “traditionally happyeverafter” life. But once in Scotland, Mike fears she made a mistake. She loves Flame as if the child were her own. Worse yet, she may still be in love with Flame’s father.
Danger stalks Miz Mike as she hunts down a serial killer. So do laughs. Mike’s rescue of a baby seagull on the way to church leads to an embarrassing fall over a church rail along the front row and introduces the congregation to her underwear.
Mike and new friend Samantha Collins take a trip to Loch Ness to look for the elusive Loch Ness monster. Sam claims to see “Nessie.” When Mike attempts to turn their rented boat, the motor mount breaks on one side and the boat sinks. The Water Bailiff threatens to arrest them for fishing without a permit. Mike explains, “We weren’t fishing! We were drowning!”
Mike likes to boast that as a Texan, she never backs down from anyone. Yet Mike finds reason enough to flee from Prudence Grunfel after the church organist insists that Mike must change her name to Allison and quit writing detective books.
And where else but in Scotland would it be possible to rent ghosts? The idea intrigues Mike. She is equally intrigued by the claim that “God” and “Jesus” showed up in person for a rescue at the beach. Mike is shocked by the report that Jesus said “ain’t.” It’s okay that He said “y’all.” Mike has always suspected God was a Texan!
