Shania Twain: Eilleen Regina Edwards, better known as Shania Twain, was born on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario. When she was just two, her mother, Sharon Edwards, relocated to Timmins, Ontario, with her three sisters, and after she and her father, Clarence, split up. After marrying, Sharon and Jerry Twain had both daughters adopted, and the latter gave them his last name. Twain has stated that she and her siblings had a hard childhood due to their parents’ low income.
The relationship between Shania’s mother and stepfather was tense from the start, and the young girl frequently witnessed physical altercations between the two. Her mother took her and her two sisters, both homeless at the time, on a 420-mile trip to a shelter in Toronto. In 1981, Sharon and the children moved back in with Jerry.
At age 8, Shania began performing in bars to earn money for her family. As a young girl of 10, Twain penned her first songs, including “Is Love a Rose” and “Just Like the Storybooks.” When Twain was only 13 years old, he was asked to appear on the CBC’s “Tommy Hunter Show.” She was a local cover band Longshot member when she was still in high school. In 1983, she earned her diploma from Timmins High.

Shania Twain Career
After the dissolution of Longshot, Twain joined a cover band, Flirt, and toured all over Ontario while also studying voice with Ian Garrett, a Toronto-based vocal coach. She had trouble raising the money to fly to Nashville to record demos, but Toronto disc jockey Stan Campbell heard her and brought her there.
Mary Bailey, a country singer from the region, became a fast friend of Shania’s after hearing her sing. After signing her recording contract, Twain moved into Bailey’s home, where she spent daily honing her musical skills and recording additional demos. She eventually met John Kim Bell and was well-connected within the Canadian Country Music Association.
They started seeing each other behind each other’s back. Shania’s first big break came in 1987 when she performed at a Bell-sponsored fundraiser. Shania’s mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident on November 1, 1987. She returned home to care for her younger siblings, putting her singing career on hold.
She performed at the Ontario resort of Deerhurst for them. After her older siblings had left home, she recorded a demo tape that caught the ear of Mercury Nashville Records. Within a few months, she was signed.
Shania Twain Success
In 1993, Shania came out with her self-titled debut album. Even though this album initially bombed, it sold a million copies due to the artist’s subsequent success. The album helped her break out of Canada and find a wider audience. Although it only peaked at #67 on the US Country Albums chart, the album was widely praised by critics. Twain received the Rising Video Star of the Year Award from Country Music TV Europe, proving the album’s success on the continent.
The release of Shania’s album “The Woman in Me” in 1995 marked the beginning of her successful music career. After its initial year of release, this album had already sold 4 million copies. Songs like “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” “You Win My Love” and “No One Needs to Know” were featured on “The Woman in Me.” As well as winning Album of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, this album also won the Grammy for Best Country Album.
After the success of “Amazing Grace,” her next album, “Come On Over,” in 1997, sold over 40 million copies worldwide to become the best-selling studio album by a female act of any genre and the best-selling country album of all time. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “You’re Still the One” were featured on this album and are two of her most well-known songs to date.
